With our minds set on protecting Mother Earth and crusading for new beauty industry norms, waste is a natural consideration for us. We cannot avoid waste altogether, but we can reduce, reuse and recycle it to make sure that, whenever possible, we let old become new again. That's our packaging ethos.
Meet our Material Quartet
Plastic, cardboard, paper and glass. These are the four parts that make up our packaging.
Let´s talk about plastic first. Fact of life: The more plastic we make, the more fossil fuels we need, so the more we aggravate climate change. That’s why, until better alternatives are available, we will continue to increase the content of recycled plastic in our packaging.
Because Astalou is proud to carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, we also only use clean plastic types (PE, PP and PET) that can be recycled when sorted correctly. On top of that, our labels are made of residue from palm-oil pulp production and are biobased.
Then there is cardboard. When it comes to secondary packaging, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel requires 80% recycled materials. We have raised the bar and made all our boxes from 100% recycled cardboard. Add to that a FSC certification.
Likewise, the seals on our boxes are made of sustainable paper that is sourced in an environmentally friendly, socially responsible and economically viable manner.
Glass is last. We are dedicated to increasing the content of recycled glass in our containers, and nothing would please us more than announcing we use 100%. We don’t, because we can’t. So we keep pushing the boundaries for what is possible and accept that good things take time.
Finally, all parts (with the exception of parts for pumps) can be sorted separately without the use of tools. This means every part has the potential to be recycled and reused and get a second chance.
The Astalou Waste-Sorting Guide
Complex as it may seem at first, waste sorting does not have to be a time-consuming affair. Here´s a step-by-step guide to how to easily do good when disposing of your Astalou favourites. Note that rules and regulations may vary from country to country, and even within regions. Please check your local recycling guidelines to ensure products are placed in their proper home.
